The Lake District is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas in the United Kingdom and this was true also of Alfred Wainwright. Over a period of 13 years Wainwright produced his now famous series of books, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, detailing 214 fells of the Lake District. Each fell was meticulously hand drawn by Wainwright himself and routes to the summit described.

Using the lakes, valleys and roads as boundaries Wainwright divided the Lake District in to seven geographical areas as a way of grouping the fells. The seven areas are as follows:
